I’m sure you’re fine.
A plate without fresh veg is alien to me - but then I grow my own and always have some at hand.
As @anon67050589 says - frozen is good, and even tins are not that bad (taking us back to Jack Monroe).

Total aside here, but am I the only Happy Mutant who doesn’t like soda bread? I have never understood its popularity.

But did you read his recipe - with Marmite and black treacle? Mmmmmmm!

Not sure if Marmite is going to be available to you, but if it is, fancy trying it and reporting back? :wink:
(No starter needed!)

Combine 15g of bicarbonate of soda, 10g of salt, 5g of caraway seeds, a handful of porridge oats or any other random seeds you have. Then mix that with 400g of a combination of any flours you have. Stir in half a litre of any milk, soured with the juice of one lemon. Then melt together a generous tablespoon of black treacle and an equally generous teaspoon of Marmite in a small pan and stir that in, too. Lick the Marmitey/treacly pan clean; it’s a taste sensation. You should now have either a sloppy dough or stiff batter, depending on how you look at it. Bake at 190C (fan-assisted) for an hour in a one-litre loaf tin.

Well, it’s as good as any other good bread, for me - but not something I go out of my way to find. But Adrian’s inclusion of Marmite and black treacle has me intrigued. If I had spare flour I’d try it - but flour is getting hard to find here, for the present.

In fact I may just try the Marmite/black treacle mixture on its own!

I was led to believe during a hungover rant by someone in Dublin one morning, everyone likes the first version of irish brown bread they had and hates all the others. The only one that is ‘right’ is the one your mom or whomever first served it to you was. It is so good the experience SEARS IT SELF INTO YOUR TASTE BUDS and thats the only irish brown bread you’ll accept.

Yeah, now that you’ve provided that recipe, I think I’ll have to try it. Wondering if molasses or dark corn syrup can substitute for the treacle, which is harder to get in the States than Marmite.

Personal favorite way to use Marmite: a spoonful stirred into warm water in a large mug. Feels a little like drinking consomme.

I assumed black treacle was universal. Silly me.

It is VERY thick and viscous, is all I can say re whether either of those would substitute.

This article suggests a dark molasses may work.

I used to live/work in Britain, so I’ve baked with treacle before, but never in this country. We can get Lyle’s golden syrup in certain stores in the States, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen treacle here. But yeah, molasses seems like the closest approximation, and that I have readily available. Thanks!

:raising_hand_woman:haven’t had soda bread to my knowledge, but reckon I wouldn’t like it. Because I don’t like sourdough - to me, the taste is wrong, so I figure I’d think the same thing of soda bread :woman_shrugging:

No, actually, they couldn’t be more different, both in taste and in texture.

So maybe you should try soda bread!

How much actual soda bread, rather than American sweet scone thing, have you had?

Try this:

And brown bread is generally tastier. You can use the same recipe but you’re gonna wanna do 50% whole wheat, 50% pastry or cake flour. And it helps to toss in some wheat germ and wheat bran if you have it.

If you can find extra coarse Irish wholemeal you can just sub it for the white willy nilly. 50/50 or 100% whole meal.

Cheese sandwich. Good homemade white bread, cheddar or provolone, and that’s it. A slightly guilty pleasure!
