A porridge or something of the sorts with it would also be pretty fantastic i would imagine though i can see it used in other dishes. Will have to see if my grocery store (HEB) might have it in their bulk aisle, if not there’s a chance the upscale sister store (Central Market) in the nicer part of town might stock wheat berries. I was there earlier today and i was reminded why i like going there once in a blue moon as they stock good stuff i can’t find elsewhere, sometimes for a pretty reasonable price.

Speaking Central Market, while i was there i decided to get a cider that sounded interesting

And also picked up a new syrup for cocktail/mocktail purposes, havent tried that brand before so looking forward to testing it.

I’ve sprouted raw wheat berries, and then tossed them into soups. (Best when they are just a teensy bit sprouted. Otherwise you’re growing wheatgrass, which becomes very tough to chew.)

My food co-op carries them in the bulk aisle for $1.59 a pound. (Exactly which type of wheat, I couldn’t tell you without going to the store and looking for a label on the bin…)

Drinking the cider, and my thoughts on it are mixed. Overall i would say it’s fine, subjective score based on my tastes maybe a 6/10. The ginger is subtle enough to be barely present but detectable, the yuzu gives a really nice aroma and its not overpoweringly lemony but present throughout. Somehow while drinking this i get a sensation that approximates the flavor profile of a citrus-y beer yet vaguely reminiscent of a white wine but doesn’t quite get there on either flavor profile, it’s interesting enough that i don’t mind it but my partner definitely disliked it but she couldn’t really tell me why she hated it.

I’m interested in the pom grapefruit syrup, it has a recipe for a smoky paloma which is 100% up my alley so i will try that at some point and include thoughts on that, and perhaps will also try it on its own with some sparkling water as well.

There is a medieval dish called frummenty which is wheat berries cooked in milk with spices-cinnamon and saffron and nutmeg, whatever you have that takes your fancy. Add a bit of sweetener. Since there are no measurements given in the recipes, there has been some heated discussion about whether it was supposed to be soupy or clumpy like modern oatmeal. Cook it as you like and serve it forth.

More salmon-related goodness. This time, I gave my MiL some skeins o f salmon eggs and she gave us a jar of Japanese-style cured salmon eggs. On rice with prepared seaweed or wrapped in roasted nori sheets it was freakin’ amazing!

my second attempt at cider making is now in bottles:

twleve 16oz, swingtop bottles of apple/ blueberry cider and two 1liter plastic bottles* plus the nine swingtops of starfruit cider.

why bueberry? simple: the fermenter came with ingredients to make a fruit cider, this one had a can of blueberries :man_shrugging:t2:
(*)the one liter plastic, screw top bottles also came with, and while i would not have bought them to use, i had run out of swingtop bottles and still had 2 liters left! i have already tried the liter bottles of starfruit cider and it is really good! super dry, crisp and tart! AVB of that one is around 6%, and i expect the blueberry one to be a little higher, as it started with more sugar in the primary.
niw i have a wagonload of some ciders to make yummy holiday libations!
cheers!

So when do the Thanksgiving invitations get sent out? Gotta book my flight, right? That’s a far distance to drive!

Should I bring a folding ‘banquet’ (seats 6, or 8 if tiny chairs) table, as I won’t be the only Regular Mutant to show up?

I am starting to master this potato pie. This time I mixed the cheese with a bechamel sauce.

I just bottled two batches of mead: blackberry that finished at a whopping 20% ABV and a Bavarian braggot at 19%.

This was my first braggot and I’m really happy with it. Smooth and balanced.

You’re being a bit of a braggart about your braggot!

Fried cabbage and pineapple, salmon, refried beans. Started the cabbage and pineapple in the same pan, added the salmon about ten to fifteen minutes later.
