The problem: markdown interpreters turn hashtags into html header text. On reflection, I think most would agree that the hash symbol has entered the realm of semantics, even at the beginning of a line.

Yeah, use the backslash at the beginning to escape it.
Problem is that Markdown predates Twitter by a fair bit (2004), so this wasn’t exactly on the radar.
Good news is CommonMark requires a space between the hash and the word, so it is less exposed to this issue… try and see: http://jgm.github.io/stmd/js/
