“Whoosh Airways Flight 39 to Whooshville is boarding now. Please make your way to the boarding gate.”
I think a good sequential semi-automatic gearbox probably beats it. After all, Formula 1 cars no longer have an old-style manual gearbox.
Of course, a bad semi-auto gearbox is worse than a manual in the hands of a good driver.

we need drivers to think more, not less.
I see your point about the manual transmission being a kludge for engineering limitations, and it is well taken from an engineering standpoint–I agree with you there. But, the consequence of “stirring the box of cogs” is exactly what leads to
because you always have to be paying attention to the car.
If you can “drive without thinking,” then you have mooted all of the things on your list. there’s dipshits out there who text while driving. what sort of transmission do you think they’re using?
that dude is actually from Idaho
I’m gonna guess that technically you are correct, but I think that sort of transmission is still high end, I’ve never used a good one and the flappy ones I have used put me off.
I stand by my point though, because I think any discussion of the merits of automatic versus manual transmission that doesn’t even mention sports performance is severely lacking.
And of course, as mentioned above, for many of us driving stick is inherently pleasurable, no further discussion of merit required.
Yes I’ve been told the same. I think there is a finer point about staying in the correct gear for your speed, but not causing extra engine wear by actually using it to brake.
I thought this was real.
Hi! I was going to say “Welcome to Boing Boing, here’s what the quote functionality looks like” but you’ve been here since November, so you should really know better. Cory quite clearly quoted the bits that he excerpted from the original post (which is common practice on just about every single blog since the late 90’s, but whatever). The other stuff is all him.
Not true. They’re not common, but every brand of car I’ve ever considered had the option to buy new with a manual transmission. Maybe not all models in a brand, but to say “no new cars” is hyperbole.
How could you read that far into the thread comments without realizing it’s all a parody?
Damn you! I really did have coffee in my mouth when I read that. Took an astonishing amount of self control, I tell you.
Agreed. You might not be able to get a manual transmission on every make/model, but MANY cars offer a manual transmission option. Nicely, on most models it’s cheaper too, which is great for me (I’ve driven manual for nearly the last 15 years, and I hate driving auto now).
But you can throw a corporate board out of office by not buying their goods. Requires a coordinated campaign with many others, but that’s no different than voting politicians out of office.
Thank you for a thoughtful and interesting post; I rarely see that in any public discussion touching on vaccination.
One definite benefit of a manual transmission is its relative durability compared to an automatic. With the exception of the clutch pressure plate and throw-out bearings, a well built manual transmission will last for hundreds of thousands of miles without needing major maintenance or replacement.
My car with manual tranny has almost 300k miles and I’ve replaced the clutch just twice in 15 years. Compared to other automatic cars I’ve owned that needed complete rebuilds after 50,000 miles. Quality has improved dramatically but I would still prefer a stick shift over a manual every time.
Rather clever as there is no CVT in a Prius.
I think at least in the media and or forums that the debate is getting a lot more polarized. I don’t think it really helps anyone. Parents’ fear and emotions are getting the better of them. Actually I think facebook et al are making things worse as a lot of sound bites / trolling are really getting to people.
Really? All their hybrids don’t use a CV transmission? So much for that. The Highlander certainly had one.
Point remains: I prefer the PDK.
