I remember one very disappointing birthday party where my mother had rented Transformers on VHS but a Beta player. Booo.
I recently rewatched Near Dark (1987) which starred Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein and Bill Paxton, who were all also in Aliens (1986).
At one point in the movie the camera pans down a city street past a movie theater showing… Aliens!
I was delighted!
I’ve never missed the general purpose movie rental places, least of all Blockbuster. What I still miss to this day is the specialty rental places that dove deep into some genre or style of film. There was a good anime rental store and a dedicated horror movie store within walking distance. While we’re finally getting specialized streaming services, they still fall way short of the expertise that came with someone who you could discuss your tastes with and get a real recommendation for you.

edit to stay on topic: back around '99-'00, lived in a really podunk little village in Northern AZ and there was a really cool little indy vid store that had the best anime collection for rent! the folks that ran that store were sooo cool! their recco’s were always excellent!
