This idea is part of the premise for the (really good) book by Naomi Klein, “Doppleganger” (Not by Naomi Wolf - that really common confusion is how the whole thing starts). Lots of these ridiculous conspiracy theories are often just the upside-down world version of actual things happening.
The thing about conspiracy theories is that there actually are real conspiracies, like Iran-Contra.
But those don’t really resemble the ones in conspiracy theories, and they generally are exposed relatively quickly, because people are bad at keeping secrets.
