Also as Uber pointed out with their H3 scheme, hexes are the only tiling geometry with equidistant centers to all neighboring geometries. Which makes routing and other distance type calculations more efficient.

I’ve been working with hexagons for years. This image is the product of a color replacement scheme where one big hexagon is replaced by nineteen smaller ones recursively according to patterns set up for each color. It is a variety of fractal that, so far as I know, I invented. It is part of a larger project to explore algorithmic composition. I’m showing the rules and the UI I built to explore this.
