Hollywood will let striking writers "lose houses"

I’m going to float the idea of cancelling Netflix and Disney with the family. I’d do it in a shot.

Actually…

That’s Disney done. That comes out of my personal rather than a family account so if they want it…

Fuck you Disney. Solidarity with the writers and directors.

And let’s all remember that time Disney bought Star Wars and all the profit that entailed but argued they hadn’t bought the responsibility to pay royalties to the writers of Star Wars novels.

Scum.

It’s true, including those from overseas.

However, I don’t think the executives have gamed this out to the degree where there will be a seamless transition when the content flow created by American writers and actors runs dry. We’ll start hearing complaints about how everything is reality TV and game shows. We’ll hear how a lot of the series from overseas – no matter how many home screens Netflix pushes them to – are falling flat with American audiences(especially when they have to conform to the content demands of more authoritarian regimes). There will be some disastrous experiments with AI and with social media “talent” as well. Revenues will temporarily fall.

That period will be relatively short and the studios will survive. However, those 9 months will be an eternity for the MBA set. Wall Street will look at the quarterly numbers and demand heads in exchange for keeping its money in. And while the CEOs will (probably) remain in place, a whole bunch of suits on the next tiers down will find themselves sacrificed.

In related cartoon villain news, these same studio geniuses have decided to cast themselves as the real-life equivalents of the antagonist in one of their own dystopian shows.

Crabtree-Ireland said that “This ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that [the studios] gave [SAG] yesterday, they proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get one day’s pay, and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, with no consent and no compensation. So if you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again.”

One day in and we’re already in the sorta-death threats phase because of that homelessness statement
