Ahhhh, they kinda still do - In the form of Guy Martin, Motorcycle Racer, Diesel Mechanic, Stunt Man and All 'Round Regular Bloke.

I think Guy is the spiritual successor to Fred and I get a kick out of the fact that their lives overlapped in time forming a tangible link (almost) to the Industrial Revolution.

His first TV show was about the restoration of an old canal boat, where each episode was also a lesson in one aspect of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. There was a subsequent series about the Industrial Revolution in more detail.

He’s likeable, humble and completely charming and I highly recommend checking him out…

He’s a bit bonkers. I liked his China travelogue, but the show where they made a van to race around the Le Mans circuit was crazy!

And who can forget his motorcycling career?
This from the TT.

Came here to say exactly this. I’d have to re-watch a bunch of Guy Martin’s stuff to confirm, but I’m pretty sure he has mentioned Fred Dibnah as an influence on more than one occasion. I like that Guy considers himself a lorry mechanic with a hobby as a motorcycle racer, who somewhat reluctantly agrees to host TV shows now and again.

I knew it was Fred before I even opened the link from the BBS. His TV shows are, indeed, all worth a watch. There are various bits shot at his workshop/shed, which is a steam-powered fitter & turners dream.

I would like to suggest Allen Millyard as another

There has to be a degree of reluctance that excludes some who still deserve mentions for entertain/engineer/nuts like Colin Furze.

I like his shows when he is allowed to be him self, but i dont think he does so well at the tv parts of tv, but maybe that’s just cos i am better at spotting the tv parts of tv after working in place where a “documentary” was filmed for 6 months, like 20 cams all round and roving crews, and seeing how much is faked for the camera even in a factual show.

Can we move all the furniture round so it looks better for tv? can we do this same conversation another 2 times so we can film it from different angles? and on and on. Fly on the wall it was not…
