An older biography, which examines his entire life, not just the battle.

I think it was the fact that York had been previously a conscientious objector that made the story more appealing as a “moral”, dubious as it is – that he overcame his “defect” to be a hero. The other soldiers were never objectors, so their story wasn’t as exciting.

Wait, so Sergeant York was a person? I guess I just assumed that that was a mashup of Samantha Stevens’s two Dicks, Dick Sergeant and Dick York.
