This clip demonstrates that geologists are somewhat clueless where steel is concerned. He’s completely wrecked his hammer by doing that. Just ask a blackmith to hammer out a scoop in iron instead.

Mineralogy is a core part of geology, so I doubt he doesn’t know. He probably just doesn’t care because this hammer is only ever used for this one job, so why be concerned about the hardening?
