Because that makes the average daily low temperature below room temperature half the time?
From the description on the video for charcoal it sounds like he’s building towards that.

I think you’re right. What a great blog! Once he had glass, he could work on lenses. And what a great shared hobby that might also interest kids and teachers. I’m a little surprised there’s not more of a support community doing this with him.
It’s part of “attracting a mate using only primitive stone tools”.
