How to win at Monopoly and make you friends hate you

If I have to roll snake-eyes to gather any wool, then yes, I’m holding onto it - but it usually just gets stolen before I have enough resources together to actually use it :-/

I’m currently in a “my friends who want to have game nights only like to play less strategic games” situation. Not bad like monopoly, though. Things like Quelf, Bad Ass, and Word Around, which are still fun. There are, as others noted, lots of awesome board games out there.

Yet, when we try to change it up from time to time, with new games, most of them don’t work. Or at least, they clearly weren’t play-tested with smart enough players, because the rules break as soon as you apply the tiniest bit of strategy to them.

Like @TobinL said, you need to have everyone going into the game knowing that part of the dynamic is the negotiation, deceit, and betrayal. So long as you all know that (and nobody’s too upset when you “accidentally” send the troops across the border) it can be fun.

If ever wanted to take a crack at a board game and like more cooperative games, Carcassonne is really fun. I’ve won while applying a fully cooperative Satyagraha approach of never harming other people out while laying tiles down (and helping when it’s mutually beneficial). It is extra entertaining when you are beating people at a game while quoting Gandhi.

i pull that strategy every time i’m losing a board game. it becomes not How Can I Win, but How Can I Get This Over With. i don’t get invited to many game nights

Well to be fair it was pushing 1am and we all had already played 2 or three games of warhammer 40k previously.

i’m just a bad person. well, not bad… evil genius perhaps? and it’s pronounced eeeee-veeaall

I’m only interested in overcomplicated games: Arkham Horror, Axis and Allies, and debating unreconstructed assholes being among the best.

Also,

eeee-veal?

i didn’t go to seven years of eeeee-veeaall medical school to be called Mister.

So, what should we call you – Nurse Japhroaig?

Axis and Allies is anything but complicated… It is a big bucket of dice somewhat more fiddly Risk. Have you never played Squad Leader?

Only Advanced Squad Leader. Lives on my shelf next to Star Fleet Battles. <3

you’re right about A&A being not massively complicated, and on the upside the noob of the group can always enjoy the one realistic strategy available to Russia. At least they get a submarine to annoy people with.

I hate the fiddlyness of that game, no loathe. I can’t even play car wars anymore thanks to it. It was fun when I was in high school but I just don’t want to deal with that level of detail anymore. I would rather have the mechanics of something like X-Wing anytime.

I know exactly what you mean.

Those mechanics with the fiddly bits done by a processor would make a sweet tablet app, though.

Would Munchkin also work?

Y’know, given it’s a card game that’s actually being made now.

Can’t say as I’ve never handled Munchkin. Let me know how it goes!

I’m pretty squarely on the side of making Monopoly entertaining/playable. Up to and including the removal of Monopoly altogether.

Why hasn’t anyone made a Game of Thrones Risk yet? Doesn’t the world actually need that?

And this is why we need a BB style manual!

there is this which is a bit more complex than risk but essentially that.

Have you played it? Any idea if it’s any good?
