HP's Nonpology

I know someone with a framed version of this print hanging up next to where the wine is stored…

Yep, that’s what I started with! What does HET! mean? And in what language?

It’s some kind of commie, Rusky language. “No!” I think.

Ah, it’s spelled: нет

Pronounced Net. N’yet. Or in Scottish “Not yet.”

I don’t do a huge amount of printing at home, but I need to print things (b&w) fairly often. For the last fifteen years or so I’ve bought used laser printers from thrift stores. You can check them at the store to see if they work, and they cost from $10 to $25. I don’t run out of toner often. When I do I usually splurge for OEM cartridges on ebay, which are twice the price of third-party carts and refills (say $50 versus $20). My used LJ5 ran happily for years and years before dying. Presently I have two printers: a used Brother all-in-one ($20) and a new-in-box Brother mini desktop ($10). The downside is if one breaks the cost of fixing if is prohibitive. I donate it to Goodwill and let them decide whether to refurb or recycle.

You forgot to add “Sad!”

Fair enough.

It’s very hard to attribute humour in short text replies, and that one seemed ‘cut-and-paste’ non-humour there.

Apologies for getting that one wrong.

but you must admit inkjet technology sucks, and is very expensive if it’s used much.

No arguments there

that reminds me that I should replace the remaining 19" monitor on my desk so I can have even more gorgeous astrophotoporn backgrounds

Indeed, I went with a colour laser printer, but even then the inks are about twice what they should be (assuming there’s no other reason why the cost is 2x per page what my previous ancient printer was).

I think laser printers are tangled in the same sort of mess. They’re like inkjets, but writ slightly smaller.

And why not, unless projects like the EcoTank mentioned by @matthjones take off the consumer will generally take the cheapest thing right now and ignore future expenses. It’s why you tend to need legislation to prevent cross-subsidization or at least legislation to make knock-offs practical.

It depends very much on which laser printer you get. If you’re going to be printing enough that you’ll need new toner more than once in several years, then check reviews for cost per page calculation, and always go with the office grade products rather than the consumer grade products.

On the other hand, if you don’t print very often at all, it becomes far less of an issue. I expect I’ll need to buy new toner a few times before I die… but not many.

The real savings is from the way laser printer toner does not dry out. Your printer never needs to empty half its cartridge in “cleaning operations” the way every single inkjet in the world will need to do if you print infrequently. And given the modern world of phones and tablets and apps, infrequent need to print is becoming a more and more common use case all the time.

I also use a wireless laser printer by Brother. And, Brother, does it work just fine.

While still massively cheaper to operate, I don’t understand why persons buy color printers at all. Just print color photos from work or Kinko’s and save a butt-ton.

If I want my wedding, etc. photos printed with any non-disposable quality, I’ll talk to a local printing shop.

because actual persons have to order workplace printers?

Q.E.D.

i suppose for most people that would be fine but i do art photography and i much prefer to have the capability to make full use of photos taken with my high-quality dslr cameras along with the flexibility to make prints with a variety of ink types for getting so many different effects and visual textures. as the artist, i prefer to have the ability to control these different aspects of printing in my hands.

Of course! I’m not discussing persons who use it for a living or hobby.

Sorry, I meant for home use, the initial complaint was the supposed cost of it compared to home inkjets.

Kid’s projects, mostly.

I figured the initial coloured ink catridges would last for the life of the printer. Little did I know my youngest really, really likes magenta…
