I don’t know, but I read the statement as "The authors note that their on-campus surveys found the following finding: 12 percent of the students polled had had sex with multiple men in a 24 hour period and hypothesized that an evolutionary function of the (etc, etc, etc).’
I was thinking, “Wow, either they must have exclusively polled the evolutionary biology department, or a lot more people are having sex with multiple partners and at the same time hypothesizing about the evolutionary function of the penis than I’d ever expected.”
On an unrelated note “The researchers designed an ingenious experiment.” with this topic is probably the most clever “get me to click the read more link” last line I’ve seen in a while.

Although googling for odd things can be fun. I posted a pic on a friends facebook page once and hold him I hope he appreciated it because now I have “gay Russian sailor” in my search queries, god knows what kind of ads I was going to get
