That would require work. It’s much easier to just plunder what can be found.

But that’s the a pinnacle of Alternative/Chinese/Folk Medicine. There’s no rhyme or reason behind the the medicinal properties of an Pangolian, otherwise it would stop being Alternative/Chinese/Folk Medicine and immediately become just medicine. It just takes one random “doctor” to say “Rhino Horns will cure your impotence” and voila its a hotly sought after cure to people’s ailments where Western/Modern Medicine doesn’t have that strong of a foothold.

Its also difficult to stop/regulate simply because these endangered animal medicines go through the same channels that drugs and smuggling do. The best way to solve this is to educate the nations where this snake oil medicine is still popular. Though trying to shake a culture from millennial old beliefs is easier said than done.

I don’t understand why these sorts of trades don’t make the effort to farm the animals they consume.

For the most part animals that are rare in the wild are difficult to raise in significant numbers. It’s easy to raise something like a chicken; they are social animals which have a short and prodigious reproductive cycle and can eat almost anything. They basically raise themselves if you can keep the predators away.

By contrast Pangolins are solitary, nocturnal, particular about what they eat, and produce maybe one offspring every two years. Also they have skunk-like anal glands to produce noxious fumes when threatened. All in all not an easy critter to raise in captivity—most zoos don’t even have them.
