I was amused to learn that “Night boat” is cockney rhyming slang for the welfare cheque.
“Night Boat” → “Night boat to Cairo” → Giro

Man. For a few minutes, it was about 1989. I was wearing patent leather shoes and a houndstooth mini skirt, smoking a ridiculous thin cigarette in a parking lot in Reseda, California. Skinheads and mods were conducting parallel societies, coexisting but not interacting, just waiting to see Madness at the Chuck Landis Country Club.
