CNN chastely held back on the subsidiary horrors to focus on the headliners. It left out two particularly interesting things: a) his collection of 1:8 size Nazi soldier dolls [Ultimate Soldier, archived in 2011], and b) his expansive and effortlessly misogynistic interest in urolagnia [archive.org], better known as golden showers.

Yes, the really gross aspect for me is that we would not have heard of calls for him to step down from within the party if he was ahead in the polls.

He’s been in politics since 2000. How has all this not come out before now? Doesn’t seem like it took that much digging

My guess is that when a state GOP finds itself with a candidate who isn’t a cis-het white Xtian male and who’s willing to become a future meal for a leopard, it’s dazzled to the point where vetting completely goes by the wayside. The same thing happened with George Santos/Devolder/Whatever-he-calls-himself-now in NY.
Why didn’t the Dems discover it? That might be a similar situation to NY as well, where the state party is operated by political deadwood, nepotism charity cases, and general incompetents.
The corporate media, you ask? Please, they’re too busy being “civil” and “unbiased” to turn up something like this in a timely fashion.

I used to work at an adult video store in LA (well family vid store with a very large adult vid section in the back).
Can confirm that statement.
We had some particular customers who’d publicly denounce the “gays, trans people” (in very different terms of course. They’d rent 10+ adult videos (vhs back then), and the only ones not rewound (and sticky (ewww)) were catered to the same groups that the patron said they hated.

I’m sure you’re right about the GOP and media, but as a NC-NY transplant, I hold a much higher view of the NC Dems than the NY Dems. NC Dems have managed to hold their own against a slew of shenanigans by the NC GOP, elect awesome folks (Jeff Jackson, Roy Cooper, many others), and turn NC reliably purple despite the GOP’s dirty tricks and gerrymandering. What you suspect is certainly possible, it is state politics after all…or maybe (hopefully) they were saving this until now, where he poses the most danger and has the most to lose?
