I am reminded of a scene in the movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Misérables_(1995_film) , when the truck driver is attempting to enroll a Jewish girl in a convent school, pretending that she is Catholic. The nuns ask her to recite the catechism, and when she can’t they walk her away to teach it to her before she is enrolled. They know exactly what is going on but don’t say it, preserving a sort of plausible deniability should they be questioned.
