I left not because of the privacy stuff (though that does concern me), but because of the fascism. The Daily Caller vetting FB posts was the last straw.

Federated and decentralised platforms like Mastadon and Diaspora are better alternatives in terms of functionality and overall design and lack of FB’s toxic business model, but achieving a critical mass of consumer adaptation and the associated network effect is a major challenge.

Ok, can someone explain to me why some non- or not-for-profit organization can’t put together a bare-bones social media app that doesn’t screw people over? Put it on Kickstarter, for hells’ sake.

It’s amazing that tech companies have gotten away with charging for advertising based on their own numbers without any independent verification. With more revelations like this, that should change.
