Shaddack’s actually right, though, if you read the post he was replying to.
yes
Printers have been torturing us for decades.
They’ll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
Oblig.
Possibly, just depends on what’s behind it. Some people are wired to ride the line between pleasure and pain, in which case whatevs. But, (as referenced elsewhere in this thread), if the play is based on some deep-seated psychological need to abuse or be abused, then there is definitely something “bad” at least in the past.
I’ll muddy the waters here a bit and ask if that applies to animals as well?
You’re starting out with what you want a soul to be, then filling in the gaps. That’s working backwards.
If you want to have good evidence for something existing, its existence has to be testable. All the proposals for a soul so far are either untestable, or fully accounted for in natural objects and phenomena. So why even bother?
Ok this thread has actually reminded me of some stuff I briefly researched for a thesis a while back specifically in connection to a theory on the aspect of the brain that allows for complex thought. Also, before I even try to get into this I just want to make a quick disclaimer: I am in no way a specialist, expert, or work in anything even remotely related to the fields of quantum mechanics or psychology!
I do not believe that the technology currently exists that would allow for the creation of a strong artificial intelligence. I personally think that for an artificial intelligence to truly be defined as a unique being it would require not just sentience and awareness but also separate levels of consciousness, an inner mind, and the ability to enter a dream state. If an AI only functions when its creators ask it to it isn’t a unique being, however if it dreams, questions its existence, has original thought, and unconsciously or subconsciously changes, learns, and creates memories that affect its future actions then it isn’t human, but it is certainly a unique being. And now let me apologize in advance but this is where I am going to start going off the proverbial rails, so here have some music and skim the fuck out of whatever incoherent crazy person rant I am about to go into.
As I stated earlier I don’t believe we currently have the tech to create a true artificial being, that is because I have a certain attachment to both the QBD hypothesis [Quantum brain dynamics hypothesis] and the Quantom Mind theory, which, in brief summary, both surmize that the reason we have been unable to pin down what in our brains gives us conciousness is due to the fact that our brains are in some effect biological Quantom Computers. The specifics of this are picked up in the parallel field of Quantum Cognition which is based more in the mathematics aspect of Quantom mechanics in relation to conciousness and less in the actual biology of the human brain.
Now this isn’t all just theory there has been some [interesting (and controversial) research in this field.] (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stuart-hameroff/is-your-brain-really-a-co_b_7756700.html) I wouldn’t say I am convinced by any of these theories, but I obviously would be lying if I said they didn’t intrigue me [look how much time I’m spending writing a comment on something that doesn’t intrigue me! ], hell I want to believe these theories more than I probably should, maybe I just want my brain to be more than a hunk of highly evolved cells? Who knows, but I do think that IF, and it is a realllly big if, these theories do turn out to be true it could mean that with the probable advent of quantum computing and possibly human cloning coming sometime in the 21st century we as a species will need to have a conversation on how to expand our code of human rights from covering just humans to AI’s, clones, and with genetic modification maybe even other mammals.
That being said we haven’t shown much initiative in the past in working together as a species, so maybe the war between humans and machines isn’t that far fetched, or maybe the singularity will muddle everything up so much that we won’t be able to tell the difference anymore. Fuck knows. My hands/brain are getting tired now so I’m going to stop vomiting words and just leave you with a trailer for the new ghost in the shell movie, not because it’s better than the original but because it creates the perfect ambiance for my comment. No?
Edit: Would ya’ll please stop arguing about the definition of the word “soul”?
Edit 2: Just realized that I am proofreading a massive blog forum comment (Ok, now I’m done). I think I might have just hit my “da fuck am I doing with my life” limit for today.
Never. I’ve yet to actually see a definition here. Just a few vague ideas that don’t offer anything to grab onto.
BTW, that trailer gave me some serious goosebumps. Thanks. I have to re-catch up on GitS.
Except if you look at the history of the term “dark matter” you’ll find the same can be said there as well…
The main reason that dark matter and the soul are treated as “real” is that for variable values of reality they fill a noticeable gap. Are they the most appropriate things to fill with? Probably not, but until we find something better they work well enough.
Ugh.
In deference to @TailOfTruth I’ll just leave it at that. PM me if you want to talk more about it, as I’ve derailed this thread so hard, it’s on a different rail system.
So that’s where @incarnedine_v’s train robot gif came from!
Teasing it might be ok. Nice treatment of this in Chappie, the SA film.
One way to run through this is to imagine a perfectly human replica being tortured (and what about actually captured too - i.e. kidnapped); then parse the various states of mind - does the torturer know it’s not human? If so, does the torturer represent a danger to real humans? etc etc
Consensual BDSM is bad. Didn’t you get the memo?
Can’t hear you. Too busy listening to Ramzoid at max volume on studio cans and going deliciously deaf.
Got my end cranked too, wife’s wondering wtf, lol!
