Something like 25 years ago, my wife walked into a computer store and asked the salesperson for a “hamster”. To his blank stares, she elaborated, “you know, a mouse without a tail, a cordless mouse”.
True story.
I’m still disappointed that hamster never caught on as a name for wirekess mice.
When asked who named his most famous invention, Doug Engelbart recalled, “No one can remember. It just looked like a mouse with a tail, and we all called it that.” The wire “tail” originally came out under the user’s wrist.
