In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death 9 to the 37 396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip. A report from Feb 7, 2024, at the time when the direct death toll was 28 000, estimated that without a ceasefire there would be between 58 260 deaths (without an epidemic or escalation) and 85 750 deaths (if both occurred) by Aug 6, 2024.10

Scoop: During a phone call last week, French President Emmanuel Macron protested to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about interference by ministers in the Israeli government in the French parliamentary elections, according to two sources familiar with the details of the conversation
In the weeks leading to the EU parliament elections and the French parliamentary elections, Israel’s Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli from Netanyahu’s Likud party expressed public support for Marine Le Pen’s far-right party
Macron’s complaint during the conversation with Netanyahu, which was hasn’t been made public until now, shows that the French government was aware of Chikli’s comments and that they it tensions between the countries
Chikli, who also serves as the minister responsible for combating anti-Semitism, has been maintaining ties with far-right parties in Europe, many of which, like Le Pen’s party, have an anti-Semitic past or present
In late May, a few days before the European Parliament elections, Chikli attended a conference of far-right parties in Europe and took a picture with Marine Le Pen. He then posted a tweet praising Le Pen and criticizing Macron
On July 1, a few days before the French parliamentary elections, Chikli said on Israeli radio that he believes that if Le Pen becomes president of France “it will be good for Israel.” He added that Prime Minister Netanyahu thinks like him
Behind the Scenes: A day after Chikli’s interview, French president Macron called Netanyahu. The call focused on the war in Gaza and tensions in Lebanon, but the French president also brought up Chikli’s comments
Two sources familiar with the details of the conversation said that Macron complained to Netanyahu about interference by Israeli government officials in the French parliamentary elections and emphasized that “this is unacceptable”
Netanyahu told Macron that he instructed all government ministers not to speak publicly about the French parliamentary elections, the sources said
Despite Netanyahu’s promise to Macron, Chikli continued in recent days to speak publicly on the subject and praise Le pen
The Prime Minister’s Office and the French Embassy in Israel declined to comment on the matter
