His Daisyworld illustration is the single best way to teach self-regulating systems, stable and unstable equilibria, and their connection to climate. It was my go-to example when I was a TA in an Earth systems science class (the professor of which was once Lovelock’s student). Considering his influence, and the importance of the branch of science that he essentially founded, it’s really weird to me that his name isn’t a household word.

I’m not sure “Goldilocks Planet” came from him, but it sounds like the origin.

his Gaia hypothesis blew my mind when i was in college… to me, it makes all kinds of sense. i’ve been worried about the planet ever since, and it seems like he’s more and more correct as time has gone on. RIP to a brilliant man.
