The correct question is why isn’t the government doing more to encourage renewable energy to be adopted? Less reliance on fossil fuels is better in the long term.

It’s the refineries that need to be cranked back up from the 2020 glut, not so much the drilling.
The only obstacles are the stockholders and top execs that kept them idle to recoup the “lost” profits during covid.

How about if instead of giving oil companies government help so they’ll lower prices, we just give consumers cash to pay for the oil companies gouging?

Actually, we do that, for utilities, anyway. Not for gassing up your car or anything, but for people who can’t afford to keep the lights on or heat and cool their homes, there’s a rather large annual program:

In a lot of northern areas, oil is still a major heating fuel.
I’m glad we help, but actually don’t like that program as a long-term solution because it’s essentially a pass-through to the utilities, who are often…let’s just say, not the “good guys.”

Oddly convenient that oil prices will skyrocket just in time for a certain political party to drag out the faithful blame game. The political twist of big business will lay this right at Biden’s feet wailing and bemoaning how the socialist left caused this. If only we would support that swell putin and let him slaughter those Ukrainian people who aren’t making us any money anyway. But no, the lefties are gonna stand up for democracy again instead of worshiping the greenback dollar. It’s incredible how that bunch of swine get these kinds of opportunities. Almost as incredible as the dumbass american people who support the putin/trump ticket. I wish I didn’t need to add that this is sarcasim but I probably should.
