Most likely, yeah.
“I’m not racist! I just agree with racists in public and say things they like hearing but nobody knows my true heart so I’m totally not racist.”
To be a racist you have to carry a card, wear a costume, what exactly…
Nah he’s just a basic casual racist at BEST.
Well, it did make it easier for me to cancel Spotify and migrate to Apple Music. And make sure the songs I really like are actual files I have on media I own (CD’s, MP3’s, and so on).
Presumably because he isn’t funny, and loved Thatcher.
Ok I admit that I haven’t gotten to listening to a larger video segment. Did you?
I agree racist tropes, misogyny, bigotry, hatred of “the others” for some arbitrary difference are all wrong. But how many times have people tried to convince or persuade -you- with a sound bite/clickbait, or say, “SEE? there is my proof!” I was unsure, so asked the question.
I will get off my butt and look at more of the video, don’t want to, but I will. And after that will apologize for my question of the circumstance was in error (if it is), and I easily concede that I do often error. Just didn’t want to judge another human being on such a short bit, as to hopefully use more critical thinking than those who willfully or blindly disagree on emotion alone.
Meant, “How many times…”
Not “But how many times…”
Who are assuming is willfully or blindly disagreeing on emotion alone though? And why? Because that seems like an uncharitable snap judgement to me as well.
I admit, I don’t know much about him.
I had watched a few of his interviews with Paul Stammets, and a guy from Vice who is an avid psychedelic “enthusiast”. That’s about all I had seen of him, other than he used to be on tv and saw him in a martial arts book in the 90’s(?)
It was some of the reply comments I received saying my opinion was “wrong”, and reaction memes that gave me that vibe. Boing boing has been my go to for a long time, and I should have expected it. Probably typical naivety on my part hoping the best and not expecting the worst out of a very popular public figure.
I’ll check into him.
Come on, man. There’s no context in which this antisemitic trope would be ok.
If I used it in passing at work, I’d be (rightly) fired for it. Rogan and his producers didn’t just use it, they published it. And they know very well it’s antisemitic. They are just doubling down on their bigotry.
Not to be too critical but didn’t those comments come after your first post in which you suggested it was a false equivalence and in reply to that post? So you must have been feeling defensive of him earlier than that?
If your kneejerk assumption was to defend him fair enough. I think he’s an obnoxious jerk who got his start coercing desperate wannabes in reality tv land into doing things like drinking donkey jizz. He’s racist in the way that a lot of Americans are racist but not like David duke or Tucker Carlson racist imo. If you need to watch a lot of that to figure it out it’s no sweat off my back though.
Always a good test. “If I say this thing in a structured arena where there are real-world, legal consequences, what would happen?”
“Fired” is right. “Never able to get a job again in my chosen profession” is also correct.
He is not Sasha Baron Cohen, who uses tropes such as those for comedic effect and to point out the idiocy of those tropes (he himself is Jewish), but I’m now noting Rogan -has- in the past at least, identified as a professional “comedian” (haven’t heard his comedy though).
You’re right, I -am- defensive, partially because I liked his interview with Stammets, partially because I felt the original bite didn’t have much context (regardless of how terrible/ill conceived/etc. it sounded).
My take was wrong and I apologize.
Agreed.
I’m not sure why this is a response to me, and I really don’t care how much you do or do not know about Rogan.
Maybe the question to ask is why you would come into a thread full of people who seem to know more about this guy than you do, and who find him deplorable, and find the clip from the OP representative of his attitudes, and you would still get defensive on his behalf instead of doing a quick wikipedia scan.
I can’t tell if you’re replying to me, the other person (dd-much), or both.
I’ll say for myself that I -did know- about the racist trope, did -not- know it had a longer history than the nazis, nor had I heard about “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” (will look that up). As to whether I’ve had brain surgery, no, reasoning -trying to get better, history - again, trying. Context? Could always use more of that.
Sorry, apologies if I replied to you in error.
I guess I had a question about what happened, “backed the wrong horse”- so to speak, by misunderstanding what he was trying to get across, not reading about the guy, just going the video clip (me not having enough context about his history-ironic)and having a doubt.
