CBC Radio had fun:
CH: Yesterday marked an auspicious occasion: the birthday of the oldest land animal on the planet. Or at least that was the day chosen to celebrate it. No one’s sure when his actual birthday was. And Jonathan himself doesn’t know or care. Jonathan is a tortoise and he is now 191 years old, with his birth year estimated as 1832 – 35 years before John A. MacDonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada. Jonathan has lived through the reigns of eight British monarchs, 40 American presidents and 11 months of George Santos in Congress, as well as his entire, illustrious volleyball career. Last year – around this time – Nil spoke to his caretaker Teeny Lucy on the island of St Helena where he resides. At the time, both Ms. Lucy and Jonathan were coming down from the highs of an extended celebration of his 190th birthday.
“Go to hell, you old bastard!”
Suuuuure he’s 191. They’re going to have to cut him open and count the rings to be sure.
The turtle was quoted as saying, “Get off my damn lawn!!”
If you ever find yourself in Rapid City, SD, Reptile Gardens lets you pet the giant Aldabra tortoises. They’re adorable and very gentle and friendly.
