Joshua Schulte named as suspect in 'Vault 7' leak of CIA tools to Wikileaks, but charged instead over child porn

It’s pretty clear that they want to nail him for the leaks, but don’t have enough evidence for that.

The chat doesn’t make him look guilty of downloading or storing CP (IMO, anyways). It just makes him look sort of OK with it if it hypothetically happened.

If he’s sort of OK with that, I’m sort of OK with them throwing the book at him. So long as they aren’t coming up with new, novel legal precedents which give them new powers over the rest of us.

Or they don’t want to discuss their work in a court of law, where the other side has rights to discovery.

My initial thought was that it was a setup, and they planted it, but the chat conversation does seem fairly damning.

"The old tricks are the best tricks"

That’s what they taught us back in the academy. Many positive waves I send to that human, hang in there we’re coming, for you and Reality Winner…

Let never be clear, I’m not defending his actions. I know nothing about the accuracy of any of these accusations, charges, etc against this person. With that said, I think we can all agree it’s easier to character assassinate a pedophile vs being a whistleblower in this day in age.

We have that same debacle with the “Stingray IMSI Catcher”. You can’t write laws on something if most lawmakers are unaware of the existence of such things.

I haven’t read all the details yet but if this ends up coming down to “do you side with the CIA or the guy who likely trafficked in child porn?” I reserve the right to answer “none of the above, please.”

Seems odd that a CIA employee would feel safe storing KP even though he admits the encryption is useless and expects a knock on the door from the FBI.

Or perhaps this is another example of being the law is being above the law?

I agree with the points he’s making about the criminal justice system needing massive reforms. It totally does. However…

This is a guy who worked for the CIA and they found his password on his phone? And now he’s writing about it on Facebook, under the title “Who is John Galt. And I didn’t read far but the first post describes child pornography as a victimless crime…

Fuck him.

It’s beginning to seem like every computer they inspect has illegal porn.

“The FBI also sent along photos they obtained from one of Schulte’s phones to prosecutors in Loudoun County, where he lived when he worked for the CIA. The photos, taken in April 2015, show a woman “passed out on the floor” of his bathroom and being sexually assaulted. The unnamed woman has been referred to as Schulte’s friend and former roommate.“

There’s more than enough here to arrest this guy. And it sure looks like more than enough evidence to make convictions very likely.

Another question is - how did he ever pass their background check?

They like crypto that only the good guys can break. Maybe they like contractors that only the good guys can bust or blackmail? /s

A Randoid Libertarian. Looks like we’re going to need a bigger crazy wall.

I am starting to get the impression that anyone who runs afoul of the international intelligence communities will somehow be found with CP or some other socially abhorrent deviancy. That just seems a little too convenient to me.

Any conspiracy theory that starts with actual NSA, CIA and FBI involvement is already a divide-by-zero problem when trying to do a sanity check.

I don’t understand how someone who sees themselves as a libertarian can possibly justify working for a government agency that has a long history of violating people’s rights?

Have you met Libertarians? They are fine with it as long as the rights being violated belong to those people.

It’s just hypocritical, in my view.
