For further research, i recommend Aniara.
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.
I’ve looked into possibilities of travelling UK to Japan via cargo ship over the last few years - just for the experience and as you say, to unplug. I think the last route I examined would have been 42 nights at around $100 a night so I decided to pass…
However I do love a long distance ferry in Japan. Facilities are great, accommodation cheap and comfy, I’ll do a 21 hour run from Yokosuka (South of Tokyo) to Kitakyushu in a few weeks, can’t wait.
But I’ll pass on the big cruises, thanks but no thanks
How much for the Pretender Suite?
Same here. Last time I checked the companies recommended for bookings weren’t accepting passengers because of COVID. It seemed like they were more concerned about people from a variety of countries having a negative impact on their business operations than the pleasure cruise companies:
amazing.
Led Zeppelin’s management threatened a copyright infringement lawsuit against the label, its attorneys demanding that all copies be destroyed, and the band withdrew the song.
boo!
The song was reissued in 2000… During a 2004 interview on National Public Radio, Robert Plant referred to the tune as his favorite cover of “Stairway to Heaven.”
yay!
yeah, floridamanjefe posted it above. i had never heard it before so i wikipedia’d (wikiped?) to learn where it came from. it’s so good!
Well now I have finally heard the theme to Gilligan’s Island and will forevermore understand what Americans are talking about.
Thank you!
so the cruise was cancelled. Kara Youssef and her husband sold their two apartments and were ready for three years of travel. Now, they’re stuck in a hotel waiting for a refund. Kara Youssef spoke to As It Happens host Nil Köksal.
Sucks for them, but three years?! “Life at Sea” sounds like a prison sentence.
Yes, those documentaries were very influential on American culture.
That seems to be the case alright.

When I worked on ships, I at one point had access to the complaint logs, and there was a some seriously petty stuff in there, with some people complaining so much that it almost felt that they were there to complain. So I asked why, and learned that basically every complaint gets ship- board credit and other perks, which meant that such behaviour was actively rewarded. This helps explain the class system, since the people who booked the full cruise absolutely have a large squeaky wheel contingent among their numbers, to say nothing of the ones who are Platinum +++ Members (or whatever).
There is effectively a class system on cruise ships at all times, and not just a little racism thrown in there. Seriously, where you live has a huge part to play in what jobs you can even apply for. Philipino citizen who’s fluent in 7 languages? That’ll be helpful when tending bar. Maybe they’ll let you apply for the translator position after a few contracts.
In any case, none of this surprises me, but not because I think it’s inherently human nature. Rather it’s because cruise lines are essentially designed this way, top to bottom, port to starboard and bow to stern.
Yep… like I said…
But seriously, the only cruise I’ve seriously considered going on is the trek cruise… otherwise, it sounds awful.
Just don’t go on a three hour tour from Hawaii, I’ve heard they don’t turn out well, especially when run by a large skipper and his little buddy
