Ken Burns slowly distances himself from Clarence Thomas photo

For the record, we’re at the point where being publicly photographed with a Supreme Court justice means your publicist working on Friday night.

This is the part that I find intriguing. In a “how the fuck did we get here?” way.

So, just like the real one?

The “how” is easy. One party stopped nominating qualified, ethical judges and started nominating ones who could be relied upon to rule strictly by politics instead of the law. On top of that, they largely went for inept judges who had zero chance of getting to SCOTUS on their own merits so (I believe, intentionally) that they would owe the party for the rest of their lives. That loyalty gradually fades so it has to be buttressed with continuous bribes.

Even if they stay “loyal,” they can be controlled by their record of continuously accepting bribes.
Money is far harder to decline a second time…
And from then they are bought.

Ken Burns voiceover: “Yep, that’s me… You’re probably wondering how I got here…”

I’m going to use that line. “Steal it”, if you will.

I was thinking more like,

<Ashokan Farewell plays in background>

My beloved Julie,

My men and I have languished several hours at this donor event. My PA had promised – nay, guaranteed – that it would be an affair of an hour, 90 minutes at the longest – but once again our reconnaisance men have proven to be as ineffective as leeches on a fever.

I am beset on all sides by men who would see the very foundations of this great Republic shaken down around them. At every corner I seek an exit, or at the least an chance for reprieve, but I find myself bound to these men, committed by social grace to stand for the pernicious flash of the field photographer. My only hope is that the bitter documentation of my presence here does not arise at a future time and cast my work and allegiance to our men and our Nation into doubt.

Throughout all of these trials, my thoughts are only with you. I remain your beloved and cocktail-weary husband. Please give my affections to our beloved daughters. I long to hold you all in my embrace again soon, should I ever find release from this damnable soiree.

I think it’s gotta be rough for folks like Burns…they have to suck up to some throughly awful people to get the money to do their work…but the body of Burns’ work speaks for itself. The Civil War is simply the finest American documentary ever made, Jazz a very close second behind it, and the rest of his filmography would comfortably fill out many spots in a list of the Top 50.

Umm – Civil War, Dunning School much?

I personally love his baseball documentary. He does great work

“We’re gonna need a bigger scandal”

In my mind I have him singing “The Art of Making Art” from Sunday in the Park with George. Maybe the Streisand version for the irony.

Terry Gilliam has a brilliant idea, but can’t get approved by the suits.
