Kicking my cellphone out of bed has improved my sleep

Bedroom is a temple, no gadgets there, ever.

I use mine to play music in my ears with headphones to help me sleep. I don’t check the thing.

I do keep my cellphone with me but as a i rule i have it on silent even when i’m not sleeping. I find that notifications, calls, etc stress me out so my phone is always on silent, and as far as checking it in bed i just don’t and feel no temptation to do so because i put on something on Youtube to fall asleep to on my computer across the bedroom and that’s it. If putting your cellphone across the room or somewhere else helps someone sleep better than do what works

Because I’m cursed by Daylight Savings Time I make a point of having an alarm clock smart enough to speak NTP; but that’s the only concession.

I can’t get to sleep without radio comedies/plays and my partner can’t sleep with people speaking on the radio. So phone under the pillow is my only choice.

No gadgets of any kind…?

My family has been trying to avoid screen time at night, and it’s really helped get the kids to sleep earlier. However the kids do still get some movie/tv time after dark sometimes, so our solution was to build a candle-illuminated television that puts out a light spectrum friendlier to sleep. Here’s a video about our TV:

Spouse watches YouTube to fall asleep (and generally needs about 2h less sleep than I do), but he usually keeps it on silent with CC. I am really light-sensitive (I swear my eyelids are transparent) and have found that an eye mask helps me ignore the blazing white light of his stupid phone. I never know where my phone is even during normal times, so it’s usually not in the bedroom at night by coincidence.

Who decided that CPAP machines should have bright blue LED power and status buttons and that the blue-heavy LCD screens should light up when you switch the machine off for a moment to use the bathroom?!

I am light sensitive as well, my desktop sometimes refuses to go into sleep mode at night so occasionally the light will wake me up but i still much prefer it over using my cellphone. I feel like my phone is better at holding my attention so i’ve stuck to using my PC from across the room.

My last apartment I lived in for many years, but I could never get a good nights sleep. As soon as I moved out I slept better, and I’m not sure why. My main suspect is the power lines that went by the building, only a couple feet from my bed, because a few times I slept in another room and never woke up once.

You are correct in assuming that a personal trapeze is not a gadget.

I mean, I’d get more sleep if I kicked my wife out of bed, too, but what fun would that be? wonk, wonk.

In all seriosuness. When I get clobbered by writing and drawing ideas at midnight, it really helps me sleep to get some notes down. I could do pad and paper with a booklight, but with 1 lady and 2 babies in the room, my phone in its dimmest setting is best.

devices != social media…

I’ve started charging my phone with my computer in the dining room - my new home office - and the upside is I actually know where my phone is now! Usually I either forget it in my classroom, or leave it in my purse. I should also charge my Ipad there, because that would improve my sleep as the article says. The lure of social media to distract me from ruminating when I have insomnia is strong. I suspect I’d be better off with an e-reader though.

Seriously! And my sunlight alarm, that gradually lights up to wake me up, has a bright blue screen too. You would think if you were a sleep specialist or a company which makes devices that use light to wake people, you would be more aware of the impact of light on sleep!

I have a bad habit of putting my phone on top of dark surfaces around my home. It usually turns up within a few minutes of hunting for it, but the idea of a unified charging station is a good one!

I have a 2nd gen Kindle that while slow, still works. The only bummer is that it doesn’t have a backlight. I keep waiting for it to give up the ghost so that I can replace it with something a little more modern, but it’s still going strong.

I’m afraid I just don’t get it. I plug my phone in to charge, and then switch it off (power it down).
It becomes an inert lump on my bedside table overnight but is fully charged in the morning when I wake up.
Why do so many people seem unable to power their gadgets down and reboot in the morning, necessitating such avoidance strategies?

If someone has trouble sleeping, reserving bed for only sleep and sex is the way to go. It helps the brain to realize this is the place of sleeping.
If someone likes to read before bed and they have the room, a comfy divan in the bedroom gives a similar feeling to laying down in the bed to read while still preserving the sacred bed-ness.
