Yes! A much better example than ‘phroiag imho. Bruichladdichs are also very good, esp some of the special runs like the Port Charlottes; pricey though.
Just reading this thread got me noting a few whisky names I’ve never heard of!
Let me return the ‘favour’:
Calling people with different opinions ‘smartasses’, as you did at the start of this conversation, is even less likely to get them to listen to your argument.
In blind tests, it’s been shown that many people find it hard to tell the difference between neat whiskey and brandy, never mind different whiskeys. I usually put a drop of room-temperature water in my room-temperature whiskey because that is the way I prefer it, having been taught to do so by my father, a Scottish islander, who has been adding room-temp water to his room-temp whiskey for the last 50+ years, because that is how he prefers it.
Perhaps you can explain to me why you are right and I am wrong; or why this is a right/wrong thing and not simply a matter of preference? And then if we really need to, we can talk about why calling people smartasses immediately and completely devalues any advice you have to offer on how to get people to listen to your argument.
I discovered Laphroaig in the early Seventies. It was expensive, like ten dollars a bottle. But then, you could easily get a two dollar pitcher of beer. I do not think that single malt scotch had become a thing at that point, either.
A good blend is also nice. I happen to prefer Pinch to Chevas Regal.
Or cocktails. With orange juice, lime and bitters it makes a lovely breakfast drink…
Only one TJs in this town carries hard liquor, though, and it’s not the close one to me.
Got a bottle of Bunnahabhain for Christmas. I like it, but very distinct for an Islay. I note with some amusement that it is pretty much on the far opposite side of the island from Lagavulin.
Oh, how I deeply and truly envy you sir!
Scotch at the south pole. That’s my dream actually, sipping away while watching the stars, at the most remote location on earth.
Once a year there is a position opening for a single manual Machinist at the South Pole base but it seems like it’s been taken by the same guy for a number of years. I would kill to have that job…
I once made the mistake, in a British bar, of asking for a glass of single malt on the rocks. The place went quiet like in a scene from a bad Western, and the bartender told me in so many words that either I would have the manhood to drink it straight in the pure form in which God made it, or I would not touch it at all. Some people have very strong feelings on such matters.
Highland Park 15 or gtfo. Well, Scapa in a pinch.
Actually realized I was an asshole for once, read my own original post. I am an opinionated ass. Occasionally I’m proud of it. I rarely give a shit about other people’s feelings when I disagree with them, if I’m honest, but that may be a side effect of having to work alongside noxious conservative pricks on a daily basis when I am pretty damned liberal. I’m used to the entire fuck your feelings mindset and maybe I’ve adapted it for my own. Perhaps that’s because I’m sick of micromanaging the feelings of others when I’m not being insulted by again, aforementioned conservative Trumpian pricks.
The right scotch is the one you enjoy drinking. I may not think much about adding water but some people insist on it.
Me, I’m getting back to my dram, right now. Without water.
You’d do better to watch the summer sun, as it’s pretty darn cold out when you can see the winter stars, although I understand the appeal.
The machinist Dave Pernic is quite a fellow. He made several nice parts for me, and he even let me use a couple machine tools when he was otherwise occupied. And I used a scrap piece of metal that I eventually realized was from the 2018 Geographic South Pole Marker he made.
Well then, you simply must try Longmorn 16. It’s a smooth Speyside that comes in a lovely purple box. Personally, I flip between Speyside and island malts.
Blended is no mark of shame. There is only one bad scotch, I’m looking at you, Cutty Sark.
y’all are really selling me on the wonders of scotch…
I think I’m going to stick with my “mediciney” herbal liqueurs…
well, it is a certain refined taste after all, and not all are privvy to the wonders of the peat…
I won’t crack a joke. That would be in bad taste. (see what I did there?)
Because “nosing glasses” and “intent of the distiller” are totally not pretentious. At all.
Drink it how you like it, says I, and ignore all the wannabe pretentious twats trying to tell you how you should drink it.
My one additional suggestion would be to try changes every now and then, because just maybe 3 year old irish blended whiskey warmed over a charcoal fire in a plastic tumbler with a cube of tapwater ice is just perfect for you.
I was told the same by a distiller, they said if it’s over 85 proof you need to add some water otherwise you can’t really taste it. I find it does make a difference.
