Did it work?
What leggings?
I am not sure about enemy submarine gunners but it always confused (and fascinated) me.
I guess it was not that effective because they dropped it fast though.
Adidas created some pretty neat gear for the French Open in 2016 based on the same kind of designs. I really liked 'em: https://news.adidas.com/global/Latest-News/adidas-tennis-and-y-3-set-to-rock-roland-garros-with-a-standout-collection/s/b69d027a-4429-4a13-b802-5d4c739f851e
Since the patterns were developed to make it more difficult to hit the ships with torpedoes, I am reminded of “Big bottoms” by Spinal Tap.
Dazzle paint was extremely effective, until RADAR was invented – so essentially WWI. When visual means were used for rangefinding and estimation of speed, the lines (which could also include fake bow waves) could make it very difficult to track accurately.
But the U-Boat attacks really help with my cardio.
My understanding is that the main effect of dazzlepaint was to make it more difficult to judge the “angle on the bow” or what direction the target is moving. I suspect that more primitive “is was” devices used in WWI could not easily derive that from two sighting of the bearing and range in the way that the advanced TDC mechanical computers of WWII could.
It might have prevented torpedo and shell attacks, but some ships suffered heavy critiquing.
The dazzle pattern makes it harder for predators to grab… you know.
Has anyone got a photoshop of FLOTUS in full dazzle? Maybe one where POTUS is reaching for her hand, but has clearly missed or snagged a sleeve?
Not for the gigantic Nazi battleship, Tirpitz. It got sunk in Norway and never saw much combat during it’s short time on the seas.

I saw that and my brain went “Tirpitz. Tar pits. Tirpitz sank in the tar pits.”
Silly brain!
I’m still waiting for a hardwired flaw in surveillance cameras to be exposed, which triggers them to delete all recordings when filming a specific pattern.
We can at least expect some AI-targeting patterns in the future.
(Gibson, BTW. The Peripheral.)
It’s not effective against radar, no.
