Letter from a Chinese forced-labor camp found in Kmart Hallowe'en decorations

So what’s your argument, again? That it’s a smear, or that it’s a non-story?

I get that you may not think that his statements in appreciation of a strong, anti-democratic style of governance may not be important. But it is a statement directly related to politics, and he did make the statement, so it’s not like it’s a totally apolitical smear about his mother.

The only story is that Sun “News” took a statement by Justin Trudeau, chopped off half of it to make it sound worse (including the part where he predicated that Sun Media would do exactly what they’ve done), then whipped themselves up into a frothy rage and reported that Trudeau would like to be Chairman Mao. They’ve gone on the offensive to try to get a political news story other than the Senate scandal and Rob Ford talked about.

Shit, I’d like to be Chairman Mao. I’ve a purge-list as long as your arm…

I don’t know how this became about Canadian politics, but I did want to say this about the topic itself:

We aren’t going to buy our way to human rights. Sorry if that’s not convenient enough for you.

Well, this was also reported on in the National Post, so it’s not just a Toronto Sun thing.

And yes, there may be selective quoting. This isn’t something new to reporting, and I doubt you complain too much when one of the Ford brothers, Stockwell Day, or Harper is selectively quoted… though I’m sure you’re also very upset about the way BoingBoing has selectively quoted a WaPo coumnist about gag reflexes and inter-racial marriages, then gone beyond this selective quoting and smeared him by calling him “vile.”

But back to Trudeau: I don’t see why his comments are inherently non-newsworthy. He did, after all, express admiration for undemocratic, dictatorial governance. It may not be his most-favoured form of government, but it seems to be in the running, and apparently more admirable than our current system. You still haven’t said why a political leader’s expressed admiration for a dictatorial system is not newsworthy.
