Is this the only game like this, or is there an entire genre I did not know exists? Because this looks right up my alley.

This reminds me of the old Infocom game Nord and Bert Couldn’t Make Head or Tail of It. That one’s probably the earliest example of this genre (if there’s enough of them to consider it a genre).
