Oh, it’s worse than that. As a knifemaker, I’ve worked with mammoth ivory, but I won’t work with it any more. Even though it is fairly easy to determine what kind of ivory you have, it turns out that quite a bit of elephant ivory is getting dyed and sold as mammoth because it is worth more, and I feel that even if I check every piece before buying, the increased demand isn’t doing the elephants any favors.
