The (sort of) diamonds are part but not the whole problem with this design. Explaining what they mean doesn’t fix the fact that its a confusing mess visually.
I get that if the spec was to use diamond shapes only to end up with the final maple leaf isn’t an easy design problem but thanks to @anon50609448 we now have a clear explanation of why this was the result.
Because a 19-year old designed it? Shockingly, 19-year-olds can have an aesthetic sense of design, color, and graphic communication.
Design is subjective. You don’t like it. That’s fine.
