I agree completely about Lost and what a mess that was. Three words for you: “Frozen Donkey Wheel!”
I had the official jigsaw puzzle. It was hard. I fucking did it.
All so I could be told the smoke monster was magic, there was a frozen donkey wheel that moved the island for some reason, and the fucking polar bear was never explained.
In my particular edge case, it was the other way around.
I missed the start of Lost, and by the time I was interested everyone said “Uh, it’s not going very well…”, so I spent zero hours on it.
Prometheus, well… I loved Alien, and so I watched Prometheus until I couldn’t stand it, then I watched some more. And I kept going and going and going, through all the shite, determined to watch for as long as a human reasonably could. I lasted a total of 55 minutes. Yikes.
I love that series.
ETA: emotion.
They did explain away the polar bears as having been brought to the island by Dharma for their experiments. They were later used to turn that frozen donkey wheel you mention.
And I’m kind of angry that this discussion is even making me remember all this…
+1 for Watchmen and The Leftovers. Leftovers was particularly moving for me watching it in the early days of the pandemic. I think his Star Trek movie was an enjoyable romp, but he wasn’t a good fit for those characters, possible he’s not great at playing in other people’s sandboxes.
Years ago I read an interview with another showrunner who was on a syndication tour with Carlton Cuse. He said Cuse admitted they were writing a couple episodes ahead. They were winging it pretty much from the beginning, and there was never a plan.
OMG yes. That movie - oh man. I have never been more disappointed. What a completely nonsensical mess. It looked nice, but holy fuck.
Between that, World War Z, and the first Transformers movie, I could go full Lewis Black and rant for hours about how fucking DUMB some movie scripts are.
Oh wow. I totally missed those details somehow. Now I’m sorta mad that I know them too. I guess misery loves company.
