They’re going about this wrong: see, what we need is legislation giving us the right to automobiles that don’t need to be repaired.
Single use vehicles.
Problem solved.
Yes we did, which is a small win after losing so badly on the attempt to turn our for-profit corporate electrical utilities into a publicly owned and controlled utility that might actually try and hold the line on massive price increases rather than sticking it to the people. But fear of change won over. Can’t win them all I guess.
With the right to repair comes the right to tinker, customize, and hopefully disable crap like this.
What does “remote access” mean in this context? Hoping it doesn’t mean your vehicle’s data must be something that can be wirelessly accessed from anywhere, because that sounds like a security/privacy nightmare.
AFAIK, it doesn’t mean the thing you fear.
If you drive/own a car, you’re probably familiar with the current practice where, if you go to a dealer or shop for repair, they have these plug in things to run diagnostics. This law just says manufacturers have to standardize so anyone can run those diagnostics, so we don’t have to go to a dealer, for example.
I’m pretty sure it’s an overall great move.
