I’ve worked in all areas of retail banking - from teller to bookkeeper - and we never ever paid attention to the memo line! That was a long time ago, and I’m sure things are even more automated now. Someone stumbled across this check in a moment of boredom.

You’re probably right, actually: “transferred” is much more likely to be the telling word, and there is a notes section available when you transfer money via ACH from your account to someone else’s. Meanwhile, the line to the left of the signature line on a check is labeled “For”.

Used to be, you’d get a copy of each check in the mail along with your bank statement. So the memo is like a reminder to yourself, what the check was for. Same function as your stubs.
You’re not required to write anything there.
