I wondered at that too.
I can see feminine shoes being considered a thing.
But what are masculine shoes? Was he wearing combat boots or something?

edit: I’ve known plenty of women who wear boots.

Maybe it’s just a cultural thing? I can’t see any other reason why women would compete separately. Women are at no disadvantage, as you pointed out.

I googled Kenyan shoes. It seems as though sandals are popular. The women’s ones have more colourful decoration on them, patterns of beads and threads. They look rather natty, in fact. Perhaps the clue was the chess guy’s sandals were plain and dull.

But I only spent a few minutes on research.
