Man with Muslim name blocked from registering for Epic Games Paragon beta

What seems particularly foolish(and, when it bites some poor random guy, ‘foolish’ is not merely a defect of intellect) is that the US Treasury list of Specially Designated Nationals provides much greater detail than just a name; so using a name-based block is both far too broad(Hey, let’s block the intersection of “everyone named ‘Khan’ because the mongols conquered all the things” and “Everyone named ‘Muhammad’ because Islam”!) and far too toothless(spoofing a name being pretty trivial).

There is a Muhammad Khan, possibly several, on The List; but additional details are available:

If we really can’t afford to have our advanced 3rd-person shooter technology making its way into the hands of Mahometan foreigners, we should probably be verifying passports or other state IDs. If we are actually only worried about a small number of slightly cryptic Pakistani guys(who, for irony’s sake, may well be ISI-linked and thus officially our Freedom Buddies), then we should probably be using a different mechanism.

Do not do business with unpersons.

Maybe a future strong AI will decide that all the meatbags need to be cared for (or exterminated) equally.

Our differences couldn’t be more trivial to an entity so removed from tribalism.

Until true artificial intelligence is achieved we’ll be surrounded by racist algorithms thanks to GIGO

Apparently Big Brother hates people who have been indicted for war crimes by UN tribunals.

For what price? The screwed ones will be the ordinary people at the bottom end. And no, I don’t believe the Toad-faced Warmonger’s assertion that the dead Iraqi civilians resulting from the sanctions were “worth it”.

Another reason for decentralized means of production, and for as much hightech capabilities to be available easily as possible. To reduce the fallout effect on the civilians when one politico dislikes another politico and decides that sanctions are a “good idea” again.

Long live blockade runners of all kinds.

And deny sales also to anybody who knows the “unpersons”, to avoid resale/transfer.

That’s not a reason to force private people and companies to become cops and police who is “our bastard” and who is not.

It is, however, a reason for agger_modspil to think twice before posting content-free knee-jerk Orwell allusions followed by nonfunctional hashtags.

I’d say he’s quite on the spot.
