“Late Stage Capitalism” (or the alternative New Yorker cartoon caption).

Enjoy the boycott, Mandalay Bay.

Paddock didn’t have to follow the advice but, he did.

Well it’s nice to see SOMEONE has learned to be civil in these trying times! But seriously, is this a legal strategy or did Eglet major in euphemisms as an undergrad?

In hospitality news today, the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas picked a very interesting way to announce that it is going out of business.

1000 victims? Can a lawyer advise if these people could band together in a counter-suit? I would think being sued on weak grounds over such a tragedy counts as some sort of harassment?

You can’t sue be because I’m suing you first and drawing this out is pretty crazy.

The world of perverse incentives is perverse.

Boycott, or for those with more of a flair for the dramatic; introduce the gaudy facade of Mandalay to some of this:

O_0 What in the fuck? How in the holy did anyone think this is a good idea?

First off, I don’t think Mandalay Bay is really responsible for one crazy guy’s actions.

BUT - they are responsible for this bone head move. They say no press is bad press, but I think this is going to challenge that conventional wisdom.

Who would have thought when you had your staff help haul around a couple of hundred pounds of firearms, bullets and general construction stuff for making a rough barricade on a door for a weirdo several stories up a building and not at least raise a red alarm about the guy; people who got shot by the weirdo might want to sue you?

What else does MGM own so we can boycott/girlcott the bastards, run off their talent, and/or get their IP on torrents? I may be the only country music hater in Appalachia but I bless any musician of any genre who breaks contract and bails out. Nashville lawyers are going to be too busy to steal Sabrina!

Because it was all in suitcases over different days with different people. People bringing in a ton of luggage isn’t really much of a red flag. It isn’t like he walked in with guns on his shoulder.

Though note - people do travel with firearms, bows, paintball markers, etc for hunting or competitions.

MGM more generally. They have a hotel casino downtown Detroit that I’ve never been to and definitely won’t be going to now.

MGM is obviously worried enough about something that it made this boneheaded attempt to judge shop. My guess it has something to do with the fact that casino resorts have a lot of cameras everywhere and by industry SOP retain a lot video footage. If, as is very possible, there’s damning video evidence of their negligence they can’t just make it vanish.

I know all that and he repeatedly used the hotel/casino’s VIP services to do all of that. Casino based businesses tend to closely analyze the behaviors of their guests to figure out how to squeeze more money out of them, even more so for the VIPs and high rollers. They kinda help pioneer much of what Facebook and others do today.

It’s unlikely they could have not known something was fishy with the guy.

So someone needs to consult with Danny or Debbie Ocean on how to respond?

Fishy? Perhaps. But spree killer? That is a rare enough occurence that they just aren’t going to have a good model for that behavior. That’s why these panopticon anti-terrorist systems are never going to really work. If you’re having trouble finding a needle in a haystack, creating an even bigger haystack is just not going to be much help.
