Maria Butina, NRA-linked Russian, pleads not guilty to being Kremlin foreign agent

Well how was I to know
She was with the Russians, too

Send lawyers, guns, and money,
The shit has hit the fan.

Friendly reminder that “Russian Ambassador” means Russia’s representative in your country, not your country’s representative in Russia.

Next they should investigate these guys:

In November 2016, Dreeshen and another conservative political activist penned a lengthy article in the Hill Times in Ottawa chronicling their work on Trump’s campaign.
They wrote that they campaigned off and on between February and November of that year, and visited 28 states.

There is a reason to think this will matter more than other scandals, besides desperation. This is perfect long term media bait. A sex scandal featuring an foreign agent is almost perfect for keeping the press interested, even press that would normally choose to ignore any scandal. One of the ways Trump stays ahead of political repercussions is a constant new crisis that allows the last one to get lost in the media noise. Nothing sticks because there is always a hot new scandal. Sex scandals tend to stay in the press because sex sells.

I’d be very surprised if Trump didn’t have some sex with some Russian/Soviet agent at some point.

I think that’s already happened…

By that logic, the Stormy Daniels stories would be reaching a fever pitch and yet it looks like media interest has peaked long ago. There’s always a shinier object to come.

Stormy Daniels is still in the news despite the underlying crime being a campaign finance violation. This combines sex and the Russia scandals, two of the media’s favorite things.

Just two assets knockin’ boots.
What could be wrong with something that feels so right?

It didn’t have anything to do with a cigar, either.

Impeachment isn’t a judicial process. It’s purely poitical, often spurred by crimes, but they’re not needed.

None of those were about the NRA.

Unravel the NRA and Trump is done for.

Is that enough to do it? I also wonder if some of Trump’s invulnerability hasn’t rubbed off on the NRA. The (same) people backing both don’t care what the facts are anymore - can reality put a dent in their support? Or is this about their legitimacy in the eyes of everyone else, who do care about such things?

Yes.

Other way around I think.

The people who RUN the NRA support Trump. The membership is already showing signs of that not being very interesting to them. I understand if you believe it’s the same people who support both - but a lot of the NRA supports gun rights and civil behavior and NOT SUCKING PUTINS SCROTUM ON TELEVISION as pretty important to America.

Trump is losing them, the occasionally reactionary. He will never lose the total reactionaries, but if the NRA starts infighting their messaging machine will not be quite so one sided.

What’s that? It’ll never happen? Gay Boy Scouts my friend, my citation for this is Gay Boy Scouts. That wasn’t ever happening either.

Most of the NRA is everyone else. So yes, pretty close to that. I think.

Well, there’s this discussion in another thread, about how the positions of those who run the NRA already don’t represent the views of the membership (as the NRA leadership has been structured to be impenetrable by its rank-and-file members) - but it doesn’t seem to matter, in terms of the support they get (from voters and politicians). I can see the NRA’s move to be a reactionary culture warrior could turn off a lot of the membership in the long run, though. Boy… I want to believe this is all true. It’s a shaft of gold when all around is darkness. I’m just hoping it’s not bat’s piss.

didn’t until aforementioned live-television teabagging last week.

That was not the tea party they signed up for.

It is a political process which is why combining sex, which keeps the pressure on, with crime, which provides cover for politicians voting for it, could be a combination that works.

I have to say, I don’t find that particularly funny. Kind of offensive, actually.

Uh huh, which is why I flagged it. Off topic, at best.
