So much good challenging art and culture came out of Yugoslavia. The death of that country was a real tragedy, even over and above the horrific acts of genocide that accompanied it. It was never a perfect country, but I think that the rise of nationalism within the Yugoslav context unleashed some real horrors, that could have been avoided, and the socialist experiment could have been improved and made more democratic, instead of destroyed like it was. Some of the artists that came out of Yugoslavia had some really important things to say, not only about their particular context, but about the modern condition overall, and Abramovic is certainly one of them.

I’m glad that she’s being welcomed home by many in her native Serbia. That’s really encouraging news.
