Meet Hereditary Congressman Dan Lipinski, an anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ Illinois "Machine Democrat" who opposes the $15 minimum wage

But can Marie Newman win in the general election? Or would you rather the seat go to a Trump Republican, increasing their majority in Congress?

Could you tell the difference?

Whoever wins the Dem primary there will probably win. Lipinski has won easily previously, so if Newman can beat him…

The problem is that I’m still not convinced that District 3 actually disliked Lipinski. Lipinski represents a number of small towns that opted out of Chicago’s own $15/hour minimum wage ordinance. Further the Chicago version of the law has a knock-out clause:

Interestingly, the Chicago and Cook County ordinances provide that when unemployment in Chicago or Cook County, respectively, reaches 8.5 percent or higher, the minimum wage will not increase the following year.

So, like why would voters favour a federal minimum wage of 15/hr that will override the compromise they crafted?

Despite his socially conservative beliefs Lipinski serves in the Research and Technology subcommittee, and also some Infrastructure spending committees, where he is pretty good at pushing for government investment. Losing him will create a hole in dem efforts to protect things like the NSF, if nothing else.

whatever good he might do here and there is far outweighed by the votes cory has highlighted, among other things.

He’s not my preferred candidate but he isn’t equivalent to a gopper is my point.

None of Lipinski’s socially conservative votes actually made a difference.

Would you say that he’s winning re-election in his district fairly (not counting the obvious chicanery of his initial election) and that his ultraconservative votes didn’t really matter when weighed against his other activity? I’m always interested in first person history.

I distrust all political dynasties so I can be fairly said to be prejudiced against him.

I’d say that it’s low information voters who have vaguely heard of him in the primaries, and a blue district in the general election.

Newman allegedly claims to have an internal poll saying she’s up 5%. Because I’m cynical, I doubt that it’s true. I hope it is.

And the winner will end up facing real life Illinois Nazi Arthur Jones in the general election unless the Republicans pull something. For what it’s worth, I think the general election will actually end up Lipinski ( R ) vs Newman (D) if Newman wins the primary.

EDIT:

“Philosophically, I’m a National Socialist,” Jones said. “Officially, I don’t belong to any party except my own, the America First Committee.”

EDIT #2: Edited because I accidentally a registered trademark symbol. For those who are curious, a “R” with parentheses directly next to it becomes a registered trademark symbol.

Illinois Nazis?   I hate Illinois Nazis.

Thanks for the view from the ground, much appreciated.

How horrible is it that in a hypothetical Jones-Lipinski matchup, I’m actually considering voting for the Illinois Nazi just to get rid of Lipinski, hoping that Jones would only be there one term. Kind of like Anh “Joseph” Cao (R-LA) replacing William Jefferson (D-Federal Prison). Except with more national socialism.

I strategically voted for local nutter Christine O’Donnell at one point, so believe me, I feel your pain. Thank god she didn’t actually get elected, and the strategy worked.

Here I’ve been typing ® all this time!

I voted for a frothy mixture of shit and lube in the 2012 primary in an attempt to mess with Mittens Romney a la Republicans taking a Democratic ballot and voting for Hillary to mess with Obama. Now that Trump won, I regret doing that, because what if Santorum had won? shudder

EDIT: Though, I’m not sure 8 years of Sir Frothsalot would do as much damage as 4 or more years of Trump-Pence-whatever.
