Michigan cop charges black graduate student with felony for driving to a well-lit area

In fact, NPR had a story yesterday precisely about the make up of elected prosecutors. Like 95% are white, 79% are male:

It’s a SYSTEMIC problem, across the board.

The student got some good news Tuesday, July 7, when the charge he faced was dismissed: http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2015/07/charges_dismissed_against_svsu.html

cue apologists explaining that “79% are white men? but 79% of Americans are white men, why is that so odd?”

Some people forget that not everyone is male.

Ugh… never read the comments, we have to remind ourselves. But sadly, I think it’s indicative of a larger group of people who actually think these things, they aren’t just trolling.

That our police officers actually talk like that makes me, frankly, cringe.

I think this is called something like “situational awareness”. It seems to me we want this in general (no flying tackles on grannies). The part of the situation that is not taken into account by some departments is that police in the US have lost the high ground and the cost to citizens of compliance to police orders is not necessarily less dangerous than non-compliance.

Situational awareness and discretion are good things, except when race plays such a large part of how those are applied.

Yes, and the driver stll made the best choice by continuing to a lighted area: (a) frivolous criminal charge captured on video with, possibly, witnesses (no luck there); or (b) experience an unprovoked life-threatening assault with less visibility for potential witnesses.
