I would agree, especially considering the fact I’ve found a LinkedIn-type of listing in which his job experience prior to his current position of Senior Paralegal is:
This sounds a lot like a kid who “borrowed” his father’s car while he was away on vacation. Do paralegals customarily write and sign threatening legal letters? If an org wants to be taken seriously don’t they try and get a lawyer with the most impressive sounding credentials to sign it? And the lack of response sounds like the real lawyer got involved, saying pretend it didn’t happen, and don’t admit to anything or you’ll make us liable for serious consequences.

I’m wondering if he’s a lone, rabid Trump wildling in the North, well beyond the wall; he caught wind of BoingBoing and is trying to climb up and poke a stick in Cory’s eye.
I think I know the answer. MPR checked the web stats of their story, hoping they were going to win a Pulitzer. Their stats were low, way lower than they were expecting. Then they Googled Kaja Robinson‘s name, and found your post, which starts with the SAME TWO WORDS as their story. The jealousy was palpable, as they could see you were literally ripping that Pulitzer from their hands.
Here’s what you can do to help.
Quickly click the link of this story like 10 times, and MPR will then think their story is going viral.
Someone from the web team will tell them they now have a long tail story, and they now have a shot at that Pulitzer. I think that will clear up the misunderstanding.
I came across a guy called “Randy Whiteman”… um… maybe I should rephrase that… I heard about a guy called “Randy Whiteman” (apparently pronounced Whiteman, and not Witman).
It would be a mistake for which, assuming it was the first time, should not result in firing. I could actually understand MPR’s fear that a gotcha culture might demand the end of a career of a promising young person for essentially making an honest mistake in a role for which they weren’t qualified. Unfortunately ignoring legal threats is not a viable course of action. Hopefully this can be resolved without formal legal action or MPR feeling compelled to chose between entrenched wagon-circling and giving in to any extreme demands that might be made by members of the public.
I get the strong sense that Cory wants clarity, not vengeance.
This document from 2012 shows that he’s been serving as their Senior Paralegal for at least 7 years. Judging by his taste in music in 1998 (see the link in @tuhu’s first comment), I’m guessing Rothrock is at least 50 years old.
If this is a case of ‘the Noob did WHAT!?!’ someone higher up the chain should have already responded with a ‘sorry, our bad,’ or even ‘we’re looking into it.’ Geez…
Interesting. Maybe not an honest mistake after all.
Meh, I wouldn’t take music taste as a reliable indicator of age. But regardless of age, if Rothrock has been in that position for seven years they should know better than to threaten other journalists with SLAPP suits.
