Mobutu Sese Seko, scarf edition

Related: Just saw this on AskMe the other day:

Patrice Lumumba was killed by US sponsored intervention that backed Mobutu. The “poor taste” is deeper than aesthetic. It runs contrary to humanity.

The roots of America’s own “Evil Empire” run deep… US officers deployed at the African edge of this empire should not be merely the opportunity to scoff at a scarf. These ephemera are indications of our monstrosity.

We were there in the late 80s. We brought home lots of coins and small denomination paper money as souvenirs, of course all of it has Mobutu’s visage on it. In the world leader hand book there should probably be an entry that explains that if your picture is on all of the money, you are probably a tyrant. And to JerimiahC’s point, my own step-father was there to sell them weapons, a fact that never bothered the 16 year-old me.
