Yeah, if one where to look for rap songs that are more upbeat, 80’s and some early 90’s HipHop would be the place to look.
But I am kind of surprised no one mentioned Doom.

Atmosphere, actually basically anything under the rhymesayers label, is really great current Rap to give a listen to.
Also lupe fiasco will always hold a special place in my heart, some of his stuff is fucking amazing.

Fun fact: that song was originally released on an earlier album of theirs when they were called The Beatnigs. Was on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label IIRC

My interest in rap is still fairly new, and I will openly admit (not proudly) that most of my rap discoveries came from sites like Pandora and Slacker through Gnarles Barkley.

I love me some DOOM but it’s hard to know what to recommend as a starting point. DangerDoom is surprisingly good (and is even kinda retro now, with the old Adult Swim samples! Ahh, Space Ghost) but there’s also Madvillainy…
